Nope, we’re not talking about hardstyle dance parties with thumping beats here – although that might be what first comes to mind for many upon hearing the phrase ‘music festival’. Instead, Voices – A Festival of Song, presented by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is a different sort of music festival altogether, with a special focus on vocal music and its various genres.

Held across four days from December 7 to 10, 2023, this annual festival covers everything from choral music and opera, to Mandopop and musical theatre, and will feature a lineup of both local performers and guest artistes from around the world. One must-catch standout is Die Singphoniker, a German vocal ensemble that will be performing popular Christmas tunes with their own unique genre-blending twist. Another act to look forward to is the London Community Gospel Choir, who received a standing ovation during their audition of Britain’s Got Talent Season 15 and eventually made it to the semi-finals. They’re guaranteed to leave you with goosebumps with their rich, soulful delivery.

While these two performances are ticketed, there’s also a slew of free programmes across Esplanade. Some examples include a cappella performances by local youth groups, a singalong of your favourite R&B hits, the much-loved festival karaoke box and a musical theatre open mic session where attendees can take the stage and belt out their favourite Broadway tunes.
